Jameson had been battling sinus issues for most of the trip and the night before we got to Athens he started running a fever. We decided to keep him on the ship so Harry stayed back with him while the rest of us went out to explore Athens. Before we decided on the cruise we had planned to spend a few days in Athens and then fly to Santorini. I'm really glad we ended up doing the cruise. I think I would have been disappointed with Athens if we were there for more than a day.
I can't remember what this is, but we could see it way off in the distance on our climb to the Acropolis.
Part of the Erechtheion.
LOTS of people live in Athens!
Sights around the Acropolis.
The reason why we climbed all the way up there...the Parthenon! It was a really warm day so I was pretty much over it after being there for just a little while, but Connor was having a great time climbing the "mountains".
You really do get an awesome view of the city from up there! We spotted several spots where ruins were located.
How crazy that this is just right there in the middle of these houses!
An amphitheater.
These trees are everywhere! They line the streets all over Athens. They are called bitter oranges and are basically inedible.
The Panathenaic Stadium. Sight of the first modern Olympic Games. It is built entirely out of white marble reconstructed from an ancient Greek stadium.
Guard at Athens Parliament.
A Greek lunch!
After lunch we strolled up and down these streets that are lined with little shops. I told Connor that he could pick out a souvenir and what does he choose?? A 6 euro squeaky pig that is nothing more than a dog toy being passed off a kid's toy. I tried to talk him into something else, but he insisted!
In terms of motion, cruising the Mediterranean was a wonderful experience compared to our only other cruise before this one. The water was like glass. I felt movement every now and then, but nothing to make me sick feeling or nervous. And I get motion sick very easily! A little while after leaving Athens that changed drastically! I looked out of the window when we went to dinner and noticed that the water was really choppy. By the time we left the dining room, we were swaying as we walked. My anxiety went through the roof! To top it off Connor was at the kid's club on deck 12 and we were in our stateroom on deck 3. I was so unnerved at the idea of him being that far away. The swaying of the boat was making me sick and extremely nervous. Not long after we got to our room, the kid's club called saying that Connor was seasick. I bolted out of the door to go get him. I went to the elevators (which are glass) and noticed that the cables were swaying so there was no way I was getting in it. The elevator itself wasn't moving like that and I know nothing would have happened to me, but I just couldn't do it so I took the stairs...all 9 flights of them! When I got to the kid's club, Connor was sitting in a chair and looked as white as a ghost. He said, "Mommy, I don't feel too good." I got his stuff together and we headed back down the stairs to our room. I started getting worried that he would end up vomiting on our way so I decided to carry him and hopefully he wouldn't feel the motion as much. I was seriously out of breath, but we made it back to our room safely. The boat steadied out after just a couple of hours and all was well again. We went to sleep while our captain pointed us to Turkey!
